Substitute teachers make a difference!

Graves County High School senior Marley Shoulta made a special effort to find her Star Teacher, Scott Humphreys, today, May 17, 2023, to share a 'thank you.'

Ms. Shoulta was recognized by the Mayfield-Graves County Chamber of Commerce last week, along with other seniors, for her outstanding academic performance.

Marley chose Mr. Humphreys as her Star Teacher. This selection is even more touching because Mr. Humphreys is a retired educator who has chosen to substitute for Graves County Schools over the last ten years. A combined 39 years as a full-time private and public school teacher, Mr. Humphreys retired after 17 1/2 years from his last role serving the Genesis Home Treatment Center.

After retiring, he met Marley, a then 2nd grader at Wingo Elementary. Marley says she chose Mr. Humphreys because of his sweet nature over the years. As a substitute teacher, he has either had a kind word for her in class or welcomed her in the hallway throughout her experience in GC Schools - Wingo, GCMS, and GCHS. He left an impact, and when she had to choose one teacher to pay tribute to, Marley Shoulta chose Scott Humphreys.

Marley, daughter of Chris and Mona Shoulta, plans to study kinesiology at the University of Kentucky in the fall.

Mr. Humphreys, who has dedicated 49 years of his life to service in the field of education, felt honored by the recognition. That certificate will undoubtedly be framed as a reminder that what he does matters!
