WPSD Chief Meteorologist Trent Okerson visited 6th graders at Central Elementary today, Monday, November 28, 2022. While it's not uncommon for him to speak to student groups following their weather units of study, this visit was a special one.
Last December, the day before the devastating tornado, Mr. Okerson spoke to 6th graders at Graves County Central Elementary School in Mayfield, Kentucky, about weather patterns and preparedness. The group was on his mind as he reported live on December 10, 2021, watching it head straight to their area. Today, he returned and presented the same information to a new group making relevant connections to the historic storm.
Following the presentation, students asked questions about meteorology and his personal experience that evening. Okerson was also able to reconnect with some of the students in last year's audience, now in middle school.
The local hero drew the attention of others in the building and was approached multiple times with words of gratitude for his coverage during the storm.
Graves County High School alum and WPSD photojournalist Justin Jones captured the moments on camera in preparation for an upcoming anniversary documentary project. A project, no doubt, near to his heart as well.
