Riders will RISE and SHINE NO Exceptions, NO Excuses!
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year at Symsonia Elementary School! I hope you were able to enjoy the summer and find joy amongst the trying times at hand in our nation. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back and to introduce our new parents and students to Symsonia Elementary School. At SES, we are committed to ensuring an excellent education for all students, and we will accomplish this task by providing rigorous lessons and instruction that will bring out the greatness that dwells within each student. Symsonia Elementary School is one of the greatest schools in the state, and I am glad you want to be a part of that!
Our vision this year for all Rough Riders is to RISE. To RISE is an upward movement; an instance of becoming higher. We - staff, students, and families- are devoted to going higher. We are going to learn and grow from all experiences. We are driven to encourage and educate students to RISE to their calling to be confident, knowledgeable, responsible, and productive citizens in an ever-changing world. It is with your assistance that we will be able to accomplish this task. We will continually move up and soar to new heights. It may not be easy, but most stories that make history rarely have an “easy button” attached! Riders WILL RISE and do great things this year, and I am blessed to be a part of that movement.
Our staff utilizes various teaching techniques to meet the student’s learning styles in order to best educate them in the foundational skills such as mathematical computations, reading fluency, and comprehension. We use technology to assist in the instruction of our lessons. Renaissance Learning, IM Math, and Pathblazer are just some tools we use to compile data to help prepare lessons that will advance our students academically and to help them think more critically about what they are learning.
There are many programs implemented at SES that make us unique among other schools in our area. First, we take great pride in our House System. Each member of our school - staff, and students- will take part in a very special “House Choosing Ceremony” and will select a house to be a part of. All will be assigned to one of the following: Ukudala, Briga, Zinafuna, Jasiri, Kamahalo. Each house represents traits that we would like for students and staff to imitate. Earning house points, celebrating house days, and wearing house colors are just a few of the exciting things students and staff will do within their house families. In addition to our house system, we are also extremely proud of our Character Trait of the Month program. Each month a positive character trait is highlighted, and students who exemplify that trait may be nominated from their class to become the “Student of the Month”. Students are honored with their name and picture announced during our monthly assembly, picture displayed in the foyer of the building, and a sign for families to place in their yard recognizing the accomplishment.
I believe as Malala Yousafzai said: “One book, one pen, one child, and one teacher can change the world.” As the school year progresses, you will come to realize that I am your child’s biggest advocate here in the school. To be an educator is a calling, and I do not take my calling lightly. I will work tirelessly to ensure that they are welcomed here and will provide an atmosphere that is positive, caring, and focused on learning, which are my top priorities. Their journey will be one that I truly hope they will enjoy and look forward to on a day to day basis.
Parents, you play such an integral part of this journey. I ask that each day you take time to discuss the day your children had at school. Review homework with them and ensure that they get enough sleep and are prepared for the challenges that await them during the next school day. I ask the students to come to school each day with their minds and thoughts set for learning. Be sure to communicate with not only your child but also their teachers. We are in this together, and that is important for children to see and know.
Let us all work together to ensure a great school year. My door is always open if you ever need anything. I look forward to working with you and your sweet children this year.
